This City
from my field journal, 2025
This city loves to rain.
almost every day
the sky opens up and the clouds unleash
showering the sweating trees, the boiling pavement
cooling off the collective need for ambition that doesn’t get very far here.
This is not a city for running
or doing
or planning.
This is a city for loving
and resting
and healing the parts of us that forgot magic really exists in the quietest of spaces.
My favorites are the sun showers.
When magic defies logic and the skies are bluer than a bluejay.
The clouds are big and white and fluffy
the sun is warm and bright
and still,
it rains.
It pours like God Himself is emptying a bucket over us.
And as the water falls and catches the light,
there are tiny rainbows everywhere.
These showers will last minutes, if not seconds—
this city
like a dog shaking itself off.
And even when the clouds darken and ominously roll over the historic buildings,
when the water stops
this city
sings.
She glistens and glows and feels cooler to the touch—
a lover, finally, satiated and pleased.
I look forward to these moments
when the rain reminds me
why I’m here.
Slowly, slowly,
move slowly
and listen.
observe, and take it in, and rest.
Your days of running and chasing are through.
Stand in the rain and let it soak you.
Hang yourself out to dry
and dream.
